Physical Fitness During Class

Thoughts on Physical Fitness training during class? I know many martial arts that spend time on physical conditioning, flexibility, etc... during their class time? I have always said that I feel physical conditioning should, as a rule, be something left up to the student to do on their own away from class. I've been playing with the idea of some 'non-traditional' fitness activities. Thoughts?

  1. I think fitness should be left to the student outside of class. It takes another level of dedication & time too get physically fit and that can take a lot away from class time. But you mention non-traditional fitness activies. I am interested in what that entails. If there's a martial arts minded spin on it, and it has value in it that can be taken away to potentially incorporate into our outside fitness programs, then I think it's a good idea.

  2. I didn't know you had an outside fitness program Tyler. (Sorry, sorry, had to) =D .
I'm interested to hear your ideas on this Brad. I'd like to know what you have in mind. Were you thinking of a circuit of martial arts related exercises? Sparring/ground work will also get hearts pumping. Maybe we can chat about it tonight at class.

  3. I'm also curious about these 'non-traditional' activities. I can't say that I get enough fitness training (martial art or otherwise) these days and I think that diversity of physical training is good, so I'm game. Another thought: if you want to balance it with some 'traditional' martial art fitness training, you could always make us practice daken, ukemi, shihotobi and sanshin no kata until we puke, haha... "until we puke" being a figure of speech, hopefully :)

  4. Zach has an idea, we'll roll until we puke. That sounds like fun. The "non-traiditonal" work outs I was talking about would most likely be a mix of "cross-fit" type exercises, gymnastic type movements, and old fashion strength body movements. I found it a bit interesting that the very first post in this blog would echo the "outside of class" for your own work outs theme. I know in many/most martial arts that P.T. is just part of the standard class. It is not included in the Bujinkan with the assumption that you work on it outside of class on your own time. Well the fall fit test is coming soon, and we'll see if you have been working on it "outside of class, on your own time" - or not. If the bulk of the class is at the stage of "or not" - then the question becomes, do I need to incorporate it into class? Thoughts?
